Why and How to Create a Call to Action on Social Media

Social media is important for small businesses, and part of using social media well is including calls to action in your posts. Here’s a quick primer on why and how to create a call to action on social media.

What is a Call to Action?

A call to action, or CTA, is a short clear phrase that compels someone to take an action. On websites, they are often clickable texts, images, or buttons that encourage people to do a specific action, such as download a file, purchase a product, or subscribe to a service. On social media such as Facebook, Youtube, or Instagram, a call to action is usually a statement at the end of the post or a verbal mention in a video asking you to like the post, visit the brand’s website, and follow or subscribe to the account.

Why Should You Include a Call to Action on Social Media?

It’s important to remember that the customer can’t read your mind! CTAs tell your visitors exactly what you want them to do. On a platform like social media, where interactions help you generate reach, CTAs can help you grow your platform. Also, you might want to direct your customers to your website or to contact you. A call to action can help make it clear what action you want them to take. Strong CTAs can even help you generate more leads and sales!

How Often Should You Use Calls to Action on Social Media?

Consumers can get overwhelmed with calls to action, so depending on your offers and industry, use them appropriately. If all your CTAs are directly sales related, aim for using them only about 20% of the time. However, if your CTAs include invitation for the user to get more information, read a blog, or download a guide, then it’s fine to use them more liberally. Be sure to look at whether your CTAs are giving the customers value, or if they are compelling your customers to spend money. Try to vary the types of calls to action you are making!

How to Create a Call to Action on Social Media

To create a strong Call to Action, try the following steps.

1.    Identify your Goals
Before you even start, identify what action you want them to take. Do you want them to comment? Or do you want them to schedule a call with you? Beginning with the end in mind will help you craft a CTA that flows naturally from the post.

2.    Consider Customer Benefits
Customers will take actions that benefit them. So, think about what they are getting out of the CTA. Are they saving money, learning something new, or going to get some sort of “quick win”? Offering a benefit for the customer will motivate them to take action.

3.    Be Clear and Concise
A call to action is the final summary for your pitch. Spend time explaining the benefits of the action prior to your CTA. Then, create a clear and visible CTA at the end of your post, so your customer can act immediately. Keep your CTA short and to the point. Tell them exactly what you want them to do, using verbs like “visit”, “comment”, or “call.” Remember, you’re asking your customer to take action to use active, action words!
