Social Media News: November 2021

Each month I recap the biggest changes in social media so you can stay informed and adjust your marketing strategy accordingly. Here are the highlights of what you should know as we head into November 2021:

Instagram Merges Video Feed into One Format: Instagram has retired its long-form video format, IGTV. IGTV and feed videos have been merged into one format: Instagram Video. This more streamlined experience will allow users to view more of your content without having to tap through. Read the official announcement here.  

Twitter Updates Christmas Hub: It’s never too early to start planning out your holiday campaign, and Twitter is here to help. Twitter has updated its Christmas marketing mini-site, which includes case studies, tips, and insights. Get your marketing campaign on Twitter ready by checking out the hub.

Snapchat Adds New Monetization Features: Snapchat is updating Creator Marketplace, its influencer and brand connection platform. Businesses will now be able to connect with “Snap Stars,” or verified Creator Accounts. Creator Marketplace will now facilitate connections between businesses and all verified creators. Additionally, Snap Stars will be able to tag a brand in sponsored content via a “sponsored by” tag, making it even easier for businesses to work with influencers. Instagram Tests Likes on Stories: Instagram has begun testing a like button on Stories. Currently, viewers can respond to Stories via quick emoji response, where an emoji is sent to the creator via DM, as well as via direct message. Viewers also engage with Stories by sharing and forwarding them. Check out an example of this update here.

Pinterest Adds New Shopping Features: Pinterest has added a range of new shopping and brand showcase features. “Slideshow for Collections” will source products from an uploaded catalog into an automatically generated ad. These additions will allow merchants more ways to connect with Pinners. Read more here.

Facebook Adds Cross App Group Chat: Messenger and Instagram Direct are gaining cross-app group chats, allowing users to engage in discussions between the two apps. This will allow users to start group chats between Instagram and Messenger contacts. Additionally, Facebook is adding polls to Instagram DMs, which will be available in cross-app group chats. This group chat functionality adds to the already existing cross-app messaging between Messenger and Instagram. Read the official announcement here.
