Social Media News: July 2020

Social media is CONSTANTLY changing. So what’s an overworked small business owner or entrepreneur to do?!

Relax! I’ve got you.

Each month I recap the biggest changes in social media so you can stay informed and adjust your marketing strategy accordingly. Here are the highlights of what you should know from July 2020:

LinkedIn Adds New Analytics Tools: LinkedIn has added new Follower analytics for company pages. Now, LinkedIn includes a listing of company page followers that can be expanded into a full list of every person that’s followed your Page. This can give you much more detail about the demographics of the people who are following your company. While you can’t download this information, just being able to view it can help refine your posting to increase engagement.

Instagram Stories Are Being Prioritized: As Stories grow more and more popular, Instagram is taking steps to prioritize it. Instagram has confirmed that it is testing a full-screen Stories display, where users will be prompted to “See all Stories.” When tapped, the entire screen displays stories from people you follow. Don’t worry if your Instagram feed doesn’t have this option yet; so far it’s only being tested by a few users. Learn more here.

Facebook News Feed is Changing its Focus: Facebook’s News Feed algorithm has changed again. Now, it will put more emphasis on original reporting, and also boost content from news websites that provide information on their journalists. This is part of a move to increase transparency as the people rely more and more on Facebook for news content. While this change primarily impacts news publishers, it will also affect individuals and small businesses that share news articles or local content. It will be more important than ever to use articles from reputable sources! Learn more about it here.

TikTok is Growing for Businesses: TikTok has just launched a new TikTok for Business website, providing marketers with a range of resources and tools. TikTok is growing in popularity among marketers, and this page gives you the tools to utilize this growing social media platform in your business! Additionally, TikTok is working on a Business Data Hub. Details are slim at the moment, but all signs point to TikTok expanding its platform to help marketers reach their customers!

Facebook Prepares for Shops: Facebook and Instagram Shops are rolling out, and in anticipation, Facebook has added some new Custom Audience creation options. Now, you can create a Custom Audience based off of their shopping history, including: people who viewed products, people who added products to their basket, and people who purchased any products. These options make it easier to re-engage people who have interacted with your products. Learn more here.
