Social Media News: March 2021

Each month I recap the biggest changes in social media so you can stay informed and adjust your marketing strategy accordingly. Here are the highlights of what you should know from March 2021:

Facebook Blocks Australia from Sharing and Viewing News Content: Facebook recently blocked Australia from sharing and viewing news in response to Australia’s proposed Media Bargaining law. Major news outlets were unable to share or post any content on their Facebook Pages. After much discussion, Facebook was able to reach an agreement with the Australian government. Still, this action shows Facebook’s ability to control content on its platform. You can read more about Facebook’s decision here.

Instagram Begins Multi-Participant Live Streams: Instagram is releasing the ability to go live with up to four people! Previously, Instagram has only supported live streaming with one guest. With this feature, live streaming can be used for many more options, including conducting interviews or inviting customers and influencers to join the conversation. You can watch Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri share the new feature here.

Google Photos gets new video editing features: Video editing on Google Photos is now easier than ever! Instead of having to use After Effects or other programs to edit videos, Google Photos now offers over 30 controls for video editing, including cropping, adjusting the brightness, and filters. TikTok Launches Education Portal for Sellers: TikTok continues to develop its eCommerce brand, this time by launching a portal to help sellers do business on TikTok. This platform, called TikTok Shop: Seller University, is a training hub that includes lessons, tools, and policies. Sellers interested in targeting TikTok’s young userbase will have an easier time of things with this portal.

Shopify Expands Offerings to Facebook and Instagram: Shopify’s Shop Pay, a fast and secure payment system, is now integrated with Facebook and Instagram! Users of Shopify can use this feature to make payments within Facebook and Instagram Shops. Read More on Shopify’s announcement here.

This 33-page report highlights six different trends—Wellbeing, Creator Culture, Everyday Wonder, One Planet, Tech Life, and My Identity—and several topics of focus within the trend. TikTok Shares Data on Content Removals: TikTok has published its latest transparency report, providing details on the videos that have been removed over the past six months. The majority of clips removed were due to minor safety (36%), with nudity and sexual activities being the second biggest cause for removal (20.5%). This report shares TikTok’s detection strategy and how its processes for detecting and removing content works, and any brand on TikTok should check out the report.
