Social Media News: February 2021

Each month I recap the biggest changes in social media so you can stay informed and adjust your marketing strategy accordingly. Here are the highlights of what you should know from February 2021:

Instagram Adds Deleted Folder: Accidentally deleted an image on Instagram? No need to worry! A Recently Deleted folder will store deleted images, videos, reels, and IGTV videos for 30 days and stories for 24 hours, making it easy to recover content that you might have accidentally deleted. Check out Instagram’s announcement here.

Exclusive Chat App Clubhouse Surges in Popularity: This audio-only chat app for iOS has recently surged in popularity. The app works by hosting Conversation Rooms, where people discuss a topic that you can join and listen to. A room moderator can allow listeners to speak to contribute to the conversation. When the conversation ends, the room is closed. Currently, membership is restricted to invite-only, but keep an eye out for more news on this app as it continues to gain popularity.

Instagram Adds Professional Dashboard Platform: Instagram is making it easier to manage your content with a new Professional Dashboard. This dashboard will help track your performance, grow your business, and stay informed by gathering data and resources in one handy location. If you have a Business or Creator account, make sure you update your app to take advantage of this new feature.

Instagram Tests Removing Option to Share Posts in Stories: One common way of sharing posts is to link it in Stories. However, Instagram has recently been testing a change which will prevent users from sharing feed posts in their Stories. While there is no plan to roll this change out to all users, it’s worth looking into creating unique content for feed posts and Stories on Instagram.

Pinterest Rises to 459 Million Users: Pinterest recently posted its latest performance update, and the platform continues to show revenue growth and growth in usage. Recently, over 17 million more users joined in the last quarter of 2020. Pinterest continues to show steady growth, making it a valuable platform if you want to reach new customers. You can read the full Q4 2020 Performance Report here.

Facebook Tests Options to Share Instagram Reels on Facebook Watch: Facebook’s advantage is its reach, and it is now exploring an easy way to showcase Instagram Reels on Facebook via News Feed or Facebook Watch. This way, content on Instagram can be advertised on Facebook- with its 2.8 billion users. This integration makes Instagram Reels a valuable marketing resource for reaching new customers. While this option is not functional yet and has not begun live testing, keep an eye out for a chance to showcase your Reels content on Facebook.
