Social Media News: March 2020
Social media is CONSTANTLY changing. So what’s an overworked small business owner or entrepreneur to do?!
Relax! I’ve got you.
Each month I recap the biggest changes in social media so you can stay informed and adjust your marketing strategy accordingly. Here are the highlights of what you should know from March 2020:
Ads Are Coming to IGTV: Instagram’s extended video option, IGTV, is getting ads! This opens up new opportunities for video makers to earn money through their video content. Users who are eligible can choose to monetize their IGTV videos for a chance to earn money via their content. Video content on Instagram just got more exciting for businesses! Learn more here.
Google and Facebook Make Targeting Customers Harder: Google and Facebook have both announced changes to their policies that make it harder to target customers. Google Chrome plans to phase out third party cookie support, making it more difficult to advertise effectively to Chrome users. Facebook is implementing a policy to clear Off-Facebook activity, diminishing Facebook’s ability to target customers with customized ads. The good news is that the changes will make it easier to build trusted relationships with customers, as they feel they have more control over which companies advertise to them.
New Bot Policies for Facebook Messenger: Facebook Messenger has announced new policies for chat bots for businesses! Standard messaging remains the same, but the +1 message is going away. Message tags are also seeing change, being reduced from 17 down to 4. Finally, subscription messages have changed, allowing businesses to send promotional content. Non-promotional content is restricted to pages registered with the Facebook New Page Index. These changes encourage businesses to contact customers personally and in a timely manner. New Facebook Group Tools for Group Admins: Facebook Groups are growing more and more popular, and Facebook is giving tools to make managing groups easier. Facebook has started testing real-time analytics to provide insights on group admin and moderator activity levels—down to the second! See who and when people are interacting with your content with more detail! Learn more from these screenshots provided by Social Media industry commentator and consultant Matt Navarra.
TikTok Challenges Offer New Opportunities for Businesses: Looking to try a new social media tool? Look no further than TikTok. Its growing popularity makes it a perfect platform for reaching an audience. Try one of its popular formats, the TikTok Challenge, to get customers engaged and promote your product.
