Social Media News: April 2020

Social media is CONSTANTLY changing. So what’s an overworked small business owner or entrepreneur to do?!

Relax! I’ve got you.

Each month I recap the biggest changes in social media so you can stay informed and adjust your marketing strategy accordingly. Here are the highlights of what you should know from April 2020:

Social Media Use is Surging: People are staying at home, and that means they’re using social media more. Some of this is bad news. Facebook has been struggling to keep up with the surges, and Youtube has been limiting streaming to Standard Definition. But social media platforms are adapting and there are new ways to connect with your audience. Instagram is offering a Stay Home sticker—stories posted with this story will be added to a shared Instagram story, allowing your customers to see your story twice.

LinkedIn Turns Conversations into Conversions: LinkedIn has added a messaging ad format called Conversation Ads to help you turn conversations into conversions. By focusing on conversations, you can build trust with your customers. This format sends a conversation ad through LinkedIn Messenger when the contact is online, making it easier to start and maintain a conversation. Try using Conversation Ads to build relationships with your customers by sharing a blog post or offering a free download! Learn more about it here.

Try Texting: With apps to help send mass texts, texting is becoming an important tool for maintaining contact with your customers. Texting is still new, so you might not be seeing other businesses using it as part of their marketing strategy. However, texting helps builds intimate connections with your customers and the personalized feeling of a text also makes customers likely to engage with you! Learn more about texting as an unconventional method of marketing in this post.

YouTube Offers New Ad Options: YouTube is making changes to its ads features. YouTube video creators are getting the option to manually place mid-roll ads in their videos and can choose where these ads are being shown. Additionally, YouTube is experimenting with allowing creators to sell ad space directly to brands. Hopefully this will build partnerships with video creators, as they will have better ways of advertising products. Both of these changes mean YouTube is a great place to try out some new advertising!

Twitter Live Streams Include Audio Guests: Twitter’s video feature has been updated. Now, when somebody starts a twitter live stream, they’ll have an option to bring up to three audio guests into their live stream before broadcast. Guests will be notified via direct message, giving them a change to discuss with the broadcaster before broadcast. Learn more about this feature here
