Social Media News: May 2020

Social media is CONSTANTLY changing. So what’s an overworked small business owner or entrepreneur to do?!

Relax! I’ve got you.

Each month I recap the biggest changes in social media so you can stay informed and adjust your marketing strategy accordingly. Here are the highlights of what you should know from May 2020:

Facebook Introduces New Live Video Features: Facebook Live is getting new features! Facebook is bringing back “Live With,” which allows page admins or profile owners to invite a guest onto their mobile broadcast. Additionally, broadcasters can add a Donate button to live videos to raise money for causes. Pages will also gain the ability to integrate Facebook Live with Facebook Events and charge for these videos, making it possible to host classes or professional conferences. In addition, Facebook has expanding its testing for in-stream ads, in hopes of allowing content creators to successfully monetize their live stream videos. These Facebook Live features are being rolled out to all users slowly, so if you don’t see the features immediately, check again in a few days.

LinkedIn Events Offer Opportunities: Unlike social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter, LinkedIn remains a platform focused on professional development. That makes LinkedIn Events a perfect feature for any professional conferences that you may wish to hold. Create an event from either your personal profile or your company page to start networking with other business professionals. Learn more about it here.

New Metrics for Facebook Ads: The Facebook Ad Library is getting better; Ad Library listings will now include “potential reach” which is “an estimate of the size of the audience that is eligible to see an ad,” according to Facebook Integrity Team Lead Rob Leathern. Additionally, Campaign Budget Optimization is no longer required in campaigns; advertisers can choose to have budgets managed at the campaign or ad set level. Finally, Facebook has released a guide of tips to help brands and organizations use Facebook and Instagram during this pandemic. Check it out if you’ve got some time to spare!

Instagram Adds Gift Card and Food Order Stickers: Encourage your customers to order online with this new sticker on Instagram! Add one of two new story stickers for gift cards or food orders. Viewers will be able to tap on the sticker to be directed to a screen to help them buy a gift card or order food, respectively. They will then be taken to a third-party site that you’ve designated for the transaction. This nifty feature will make it easy to support your business and social distancing at the same time. Learn more about how to set up a gift card or food order sticker here.

TikTok Continues to Grow in Popularity: If you haven’t been using TikTok, you might want to get started. TikTok has been gaining massive popularity over the past year, and with people turning to social media for entertainment, this platform is more useful than ever! With nearly 1 billion monthly active users, TikTok is a bustling social media app and an opportunity for your business to reach a new audience. Check out this step-by-step guide for getting started.
